Three Musketeers Poster

Recent Watchers

Turning green

Journal Entry: Thu Jan 31, 2008, 11:07 AM
So, I'm a little bit jealous of photographers. I have some limited skill (more like bare-bones proficiency) with a camera; it's just not my chosen medium, for various reasons. The thing that I feel photographers have over those who draw, paint, or use other media that involve direct creation rather than capture, is the capacity for massive proliferation. A couple of the photograohers I'm watching, who do awesome work, btw, are absolutely DOMINATING my deviation list, in terms of how many posts they make. The two of them are about 90% what comes up on my deviantWATCH. It's almost enough to make me stop watching them, because I don't like sorting through all that to get to the people who draw, etc., but their photography is just so GOOD! Anyway, I just wish I could draw as many awesome images as these two guys cap. Here are their pages:

I can definitely see your point!
I hope your holiday is a good one. I would skip them if I didn't have little girls to delight and amaze every year.

My original comment was posted with a specific audience in mind--the casual browser whose presence is so prevalent on this site (or so it would seem from what I have seen so far). I know that my critique guidelines will not be followed to the letter, and it is my hope that what I have written above will simply eliminate or greatly reduce the amount of simple "nice job" or "great work" comments that don't really help anyone. I don't really think that honest, helpful critique is brutal, bet, in general, the people who are reluctant to give such criticism think it is such. You are not one of those people, and I hope that, once the holidays are over and I have taken the time to post some work, you will comment.

But I suppose this conversation is a moot point until then :).

I would like to disagree. Praise is as important as criticism. Praise let's you know what it is that one is doing right. Further more it can inspire one to keep going. If someone only hears what is being done wrong...depending upon the person's character...they could just quit. Not the best answer, but one that is understandable when someone is feeling they are just doing wrong and wasting their time.
That said, you should take the next step and post some work. It is hard on DA to get any real feedback...but you will get some, and that helps. A better spot for feedback is wetcanvas [link] .
None the less DA is a great place to have an online presence and a show of a body of work.
I wish you the best in your endeavors.
By the way...critiques given with thought and sensitivity are not brutal.
Brutality does not have to be a part of honesty and helpfulness.

I started up this profile so that I could grow artistically, and gain inspiration by being a more integrated part of the community of artists. I have great respect for artistic skill, and great disdain for a lack of it, if its product is being passed off as art.

Given my desire to improve, I'd like to request that you look at my work critically. I'm not here for people to tell me how good I am, nor do I assume that people will tell me that. I don't even have anything posted yet! The fact is, no one ever improved themselves as a result of praise. Please be as brutally critical as the truth warrants, and please give reasons and suggestions along with your criticism.
